Structural heart disease is a broad term for any issue with the structure of the heart - including the valves, chambers and walls. It refers to defects in the heart at birth or abnormalities of the valves and vessels of the heart caused by age, injury or infection. Problems in the heart's structure affect blood flow and can lead to life-threatening complications such as heart failure, blood clots, arrhythmia or sudden cardiac arrest.
