Leadership That Shapes the Patient Experience

The most meaningful career journeys grow alongside life’s biggest moments. Over the past ten years, Alex has taken on five roles, completed an MBA, and stepped into fatherhood—all while growing his career at Renown. This spotlight highlights Alex’s journey to becoming Director of Patient Revenue through his curiosity, commitment and drive to keep learning both professionally and personally.

Alex’s path to Renown began while he was a business student at the University of Nevada, Reno. During his senior year, he served as Vice President of the Management and Human Resources Association, where his involvement led to an early connection with Renown. “We had Brittany Brown (Senior Director of Talent and Retention) as a guest speaker at an event,” Alex said. “I met her and she mentioned an internship opportunity on her recruiting team. After a formal interview, I was offered the position and was an intern during my final semester at Nevada.”

That internship helped shape Alex’s early impressions of Renown. He said he enjoyed Renown’s mission and culture and was drawn to the long-term growth opportunities and benefits the organization offered. After graduating, he joined Renown as a Transformational Healthcare Consultant on the process improvement team, then he moved into a Practice Supervisor role at Vista Med Group, supporting primary care and urgent care operations.

Growing Through Opportunity

In June 2020, Alex was encouraged by his Human Resources Business Partner to apply for an opening as Manager of Patient Access. From there, his career continued to evolve, leading to his current role as Director of Patient Revenue in April 2023. “My career goal when I started was to become a leader in the operations area of healthcare,” Alex said. “Since becoming the supervisor at Vista Med Group, I have wanted to always be in leadership positions where I can help build a strong, collaborative team that is focused on enhancing the patient experience.”

Along the way, Alex took advantage of development opportunities provided by Renown that supported his growth. “I have taken advantage of many resources and programs,” he said. “Internships, skill classes, leadership development units, career planning, tuition reimbursement and student loan repayment.”

He also points to the people he has worked with as one of the most meaningful parts of his experience at Renown. “One of my favorite things about working at Renown is the people I have met and worked with,” Alex said. “Sharing a common mission with my peers to advance the healthcare of northern Nevada and create a positive, efficient patient experience is very rewarding.”

While finishing his master's in business administration through Western Governors University, Alex was also adjusting to life as a new parent to his son, Jack. “While I was in the final months of my MBA program, I was also navigating my new role as ‘dad’ to my son, Jack,” he said. “This meant lots of late nights and early mornings, but the support of my family, leaders and co-workers got me to the finish line.” Completing the program while balancing work and family life became one of Alex’s proudest milestones.

Looking Ahead

Alex said his career growth has shaped how he views the future at Renown. “Renown continues to grow as the Reno community grows, and new opportunities can come about at any time within this organization,” Alex said. For employees interested in leadership, Alex encourages making the most of the resources available. “My advice for those looking to get into leadership is to utilize Organization Development resources, coordinate with your leader to go through every skill class. You will advance your professional development and make connections with classmates and peers that will benefit you in the future.”

Alex enjoys spending time with his wife and their 3-year-old son, attending Nevada football and basketball games, playing slow-pitch softball, golfing and following Angels baseball and 49ers football. From his start as an intern to his current leadership role, his journey highlights the opportunities available to those looking to grow their careers at Renown.

Going All In: Kenz’s Passion for a Career in Surgery

Kenz always knew she wanted to work at Renown and in healthcare. As a kid, she pictured herself becoming a heart surgeon. But when she turned 21 and started researching career paths, she discovered a world of possibilities in healthcare. She found several entry points into the hospital setting and applied for three jobs at once: Patient Access Representative, Unit Clerk in the emergency room (ER) and Unit Clerk in the operating room (OR). She got all three offers. “They told me, ‘You get to pick,’” Kenz said. She chose the OR. That decision, made early in her career, became the start of a path that would eventually place her at the center of the surgical team, doing work that directly changes patients’ lives.
