Research Interests
- Dr. Katharine Thomas is a medical oncologist, hematologist, and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and Renown Health. Her research focuses on improving cancer outcomes through clinical, translatform, and population-based investigations, with particular interests in thoracic malignancies, neuroendocrine tumors, hepatobiliary cancers, and cancer care delivery. Her work spans multiple domains, including molecular diagnostics and precision oncology, real-world immunotherapy outcomes, neuroendocrine tumor biology and genetics, health disparities, timeliness of cancer care, supportive oncology, and innovative models of treatment delivery. She has led studies evaluating reflexive next-generation sequencing in lung cancer, circulating tumor DNA implementation, germline predisposition in neuroendocrine tumors, outcomes in hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma, and the impact of frailty and disease burden on outcomes with novel immunotherapies. Dr. Thomas has developed a robust research program involving medical students, residents, and multidisciplinary collaborators, resulting in numerous presentations at national meetings including ASCO, GI ASCO, and NANETS. Her research emphasizes translating real-world data into practical improvements in patient care, expanding access to precision medicine, and advancing oncology care delivery in community-based settings. She currently serves as the inaugural Program Director for the development of the University of Nevada Reno/Renown Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship Program.
