Leading-Edge Breast Care

A photo of a breast care patient smiling at her doctor

Breast surgery at Renown Health is saving lives. Historically, Northern Nevada has had very fragmented breast cancer care, without the level of multidisciplinary integration seen at major cancer centers. Renown Health has taken the lead in creating a truly comprehensive breast center with two dedicated breast surgeons, breast fellowship-trained radiologists, an oncology wellness and survivorship specialist physician, and integrated specialists such as physical therapists, geneticists, nutritionists and social workers.

“We aim to provide complete breast healthcare for all patients throughout the region,” says Colleen O’Kelly Priddy, MD, FACS, breast surgical oncologist at Renown Health. “As a surgeon, I specialize in breast surgical oncology and oncoplastic surgery, minimizing the aesthetic impact of breast cancer treatment. I work closely with expert plastic surgeons to provide superior outcomes and improved quality of life for patients.”

Comprehensive Multidisciplinary Care

Most breast cancer patients have surgery and some combination of radiation and chemotherapy, and many patients need all three treatment modalities.

“We can now treat even the most complicated cases here instead of referring patients to hospitals outside the state,” says Lee Schwartzberg, MD, chief of Oncology and Hematology at the William N. Pennington Cancer Institute. “We also have a very active clinical trial program, including studies for patients with advanced cancer.”

Providers are in constant communication with the medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology and oncology wellness teams to ensure smooth patient care.

“Patients now have the option for quicker consultations and an integrated multidisciplinary approach that extends past treatment through wellness and survivorship,” Dr. O’Kelly says.

Assessing Family Risk

Renown Health also now offers a high-risk breast clinic, with formal breast cancer risk assessment and surveillance planning for those high-risk patients without a diagnosis of breast cancer.

“We routinely perform detailed genetic analyses on our patients, but we’re also aggressive with germline testing to discover mutations that could have implications for family members,” Dr. Schwartzberg says.

How are wait times calculated?

Our estimated ER wait times reflect the average time from check-in to being seen by a medical professional during triage, where patients are prioritized based on the severity of their condition.
