Wondering when to schedule your teens’ first gynecology visit? We've got you covered! Learn what to expect and how early care supports comfort, education and long-term health.

A first visit to the gynecologist is a key step in a teenage girl’s health journey. These early appointments offer age-appropriate education, build comfort and strong relationships with care providers, and offer a safe space to talk about any concerns, questions, development and wellness in a supportive setting. Dr. Carolyn Hoffman at Renown Women's Health provides insight into when to schedule these appointments and what to expect.

When to schedule the first visit

Dr. Hoffman recommends a teens’ first gynecology visit between the ages of 13 and 15. This visit will be centered around education and support, giving teens a chance to understand their health in a welcoming and safe environment.

What to expect at the first gynecology exam:

  • A general health check-in and discussion of menstrual history
  • Questions about puberty, body changes and any concerning symptoms
  • Education on hygiene, safe practices and overall wellness
  • A chance for your teen to ask questions

Common reasons for earlier visits

In some cases, it may be appropriate to schedule a gynecology appointment earlier, especially if your daughter is experiencing:

  • Irregular, painful or heavy periods
  • Concerns about puberty or delayed development
  • Unusual irritation or discomfort
  • Questions about birth control, sexuality or health education

Supporting your Teen

Before the visit, let your daughter know what to expect and encourage her to share any concerns or questions with the medical provider. If she feels more comfortable, you can stay in the room for part of the appointment and step out if privacy is needed. Our Women’s Health team offers trusted, compassionate care for teens and their families.
