“This award is so well deserved. At Renown Health, we are proud to be one of the most trusted and utilized emergency departments in Nevada, and across the United States, caring for more patients than any other hospital in the region,” says Bret Frey, MD, Director of Emergency Services of the Emergency Department at Renown, and Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. “As the region’s only Level II Trauma Center serving patients across 100,000 square miles from Salt Lake City to Sacramento, our experienced team delivers expert, life-saving care with speed, skill and compassion. Whether it’s a heart attack, stroke or traumatic injury, our community knows they can count on Renown to be here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and ready to respond in moments that matter most.”

The Emergency Nurses Association represents emergency nursing professionals dedicated to enhancing patient care and advancing the specialty. The ENA Lantern award, spanning 2025-2028, is the only award to recognize emergency departments for their commitment to safety, quality and a healthy work environment. Renown Regional Medical Center was one of 96 hospitals recognized nationally by the Emergency Nurses Association after a substantial committee and application review, conducted through an evidence-based application and a proven approach to demonstrating innovation.

“In the Emergency Department our goal is not only to treat critical injuries and illnesses- but to create a safe environment where people truly come first,” said Melodie Osborn, MBA, BSN, Chief Nurse Executive, Renown Health. “By actively listening, fostering teamwork, and addressing both team and patient needs, we ensure compassion and safety remain at the heart of every interaction- even under pressure filled situations.”

Among the achievements acknowledged by the Emergency Nurses Association, three specific efforts were related to the Renown Regional Emergency Department’s commitment to professional development, collaboration and improved patient care:

  1. An innovative shared-decision model, backed by evidence-based guidelines from the ENA, empowers frontline nurses and emergency room teams to participate in decisions that impact patient care. This collaborative approach is rooted in the expertise and dedication of emergency professionals participating in committees, including trauma flow, triage, education/peer support, enrichment and shared governance, which actively strengthens department culture and trust while supporting professional development.
  2. A consistent left without being seen (LWBS) rate below 1%, outperforming the national LWBS average of 2%, ensuring patient treatment and diagnosis effectiveness as well as department efficiency. This was achieved through a team-oriented care approach, utilizing an innovative split-flow model and a rapid assessment zone.
  3. Implementation of two comprehensive trauma programs in nursing education, covering new orientation for trauma nurses and continued education for trauma-based scenarios. These programs provide nurses with the tools needed to recognize and manage trauma situations, improve patient outcomes and support an emotionally resilient staff.

“Being selected for the 2025 ENA Lantern Award is both an honor and a testament to Renown Health's commitment to putting people first. This award recognizes the interdisciplinary collaboration, professional development and innovation that contribute to making our emergency department an exceptional environment for both patients receiving emergency care and the employees dedicated to providing that care," said Jimmy Lao, MSN, Director of Nursing at Renown Regional Medical Center.

In addition to heart care, the vascular medicine and anticoagulation services include diagnosis and treatment for conditions affecting blood flow, as well as personalized medication management and monitoring to reduce risks of stroke, heart attack and clotting complications. These heart programs also lead the way in cardiology research, driving discoveries that are shaping and advancing the field.” “We are proud to be the region’s leader for cardiac health, heart and vascular care with the most advanced medical, surgical and minimally invasive specialty care, technology and research,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President and CEO of Renown Health. “On behalf of the Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health team, our patients and our community, we are humbled to be nationally recognized for the cardiovascular care we provide and to be considered a destination for heart care.” Many of the institutions on this list consistently earn top honors from U.S. News & World Report, Newsweek, Healthgrades and other respected ranking organizations. Renown Health Recognized as Best Hospital for Maternity Care

U.S. News & World Report, the global authority on hospital rankings and consumer advice, has named Renown Health as both a 2026 High-Performing hospital for Maternity Care and a Maternity Care Access Hospital. These dual designations underscore Renown Health’s leadership in advancing exceptional and equitable maternal health services. Ratings are intended to help expectant parents, in consultation with their prenatal care providers, make informed decisions about where to receive safe and effective maternity care. In 2026, 495 top hospitals for Maternity care have been recognized as High Performing across the U.S. Renown Regional Medical Center is the only hospital earning this designation in the northern Nevada region. Four hospitals in Las Vegas also earned honors. The 2026 hospital ratings for Maternity and Perinatal Care review hospitals providing high-quality labor & delivery services for uncomplicated pregnancies. U.S. News evaluates how well hospitals perform in childbirth using C-section rates, newborn severe complication rates, routine vaginal birth after cesarean delivery (VBAC) rates, episiotomy rates, best practices to support breast milk feeding, whether a hospital meets federal criteria for "birthing-friendly" practices, and whether a hospital tracked and reported disparities in outcomes. In terms of quality, these hospitals also demonstrated performance above the lowest normalized values for severe unexpected newborn complications, C-sections or episiotomy rates. Read more about the methodology here. “Providing the highest level of maternity and infant care is essential to the health and strength of our region,” stated Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President and CEO of Renown Health. “High-quality maternity care leads to safer pregnancies, fewer complications, and better long-term outcomes for both mother and child.
