Renown Pathology is growing and features expertise in numerous subspecialty areas, allowing patients and referring clinicians to feel confident in every diagnosis and staging.

A team of eight full-time pathologists and three full-time pathology assistants, the pathology group at Renown Health includes subspecialists in hematopathology, cytopathology and more. Melanie Fox, DO, subspecializes in genitourinary pathology and frequently diagnoses prostate, bladder and kidney cancers. Jennifer Jeung, MD, is fellowship-trained in gastrointestinal (GI) pathology and is helping lead Renown Health’s effort to obtain designation through the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer.

“My fellowship training allows me to provide expert-level diagnoses for a wide variety of conditions affecting the GI tract,” Dr. Jeung says. “These conditions include inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal malignancies, patterns of GI tract medication injury, GI tract infections and autoimmune conditions impacting the digestive organs.”

Meeting a Growing Need

The group’s go-to expert for breast pathology, Christie Elliott, MD, is division chief of Pathology at Renown Health, medical director of the Renown Regional Medical Center and Renown South Meadows Medical Center labs, and interim chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. Once a patient transport employee at Renown Health, Dr. Elliott takes pride in serving her community. Behind every tray of slides, she says, is a patient, and that awareness guides her vision for the future of pathology at the health system.

“As our volume of work increases along with northern Nevada’s population, we plan to keep pace,” Dr. Elliott says. “We have excellent turnaround times for getting results to referring providers and patients, and we intend to maintain them. We’re keeping track of the specialties in which Renown Health is recruiting and plan to complement those efforts by bringing to our group pathology experts in those fields.”

The pathology team’s growth continues. Two more full-time pathologists will join later this year, and the group is recruiting for another. Call 775-982-4152 to contact Renown Lab Services.

Lab Levels Up

An expansion of the lab space and clinical and anatomic pathology services at Renown South Meadows Medical Center is helping facilitate the growth of specialty services in South Reno. On the clinical pathology side, the medical center’s newly enlarged lab space features the same advanced instrumentation available at Renown Regional Medical Center. This equipment allows the pathologists to provide more analyzer-based services.

In terms of anatomic pathology, the pathologists have increased the breadth of their on-site microscopy evaluations supporting cancer and cardiac catheterization services, among others. When, for example, pulmonologists perform endobronchial ultrasounds, a pathologist sits in the room with them and evaluates tissue samples to let them know whether they’ve reached the lesion.

Department Spotlight: Blood Bank

Kick off the new year – and National Blood Donor Month – with the Blood Bank team at Renown Health! Think about the common word “lifeblood.” Many use the word to describe something essential that sustains something else, and without it, that thing cannot survive or exist. Now, why does “blood” come into play with this word? Well, blood itself is an essential part of our bodies that sustains our lives – and like you could probably assume, without it, we could not survive. This especially comes into play in the healthcare environment. When a patient needs blood, they need it quickly, especially when emergencies rush into northern Nevada’s only level II trauma center, right here at Renown Regional Medical Center. And they don’t only need blood; they need the right type, administered in the right way, at the right time. That’s precisely where the Blood Bank team at Renown Regional Medical Center comes into play. As a key part of the Transfusion Services department, the Blood Bank manages blood inventories for all 650 beds of the hospital and serves as an essential partner to clinical teams throughout our health system.
