To help you better understand your symptoms, here’s how to distinguish strep throat from a common sore throat and when to visit urgent care.

What Causes a Sore Throat?

A sore throat is usually the result of a viral infection, such as the common cold, flu or COVID-19. These tend to come with other symptoms, including:

  • Coughing
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Sneezing
  • Hoarse voice
  • Mild fever
  • Fatigue

Most viral sore throats improve within a few days of rest, hydration and over-the-counter medicines.

What Is Strep Throat?

Strep throat is a bacterial infection caused by group A strep. It often appears suddenly and can feel more severe than a typical sore throat. If left untreated, strep throat can lead to more serious complications, including rheumatic fever, kidney inflammation and abscesses.

Common symptoms of strep throat include:

  • Severe or persistent sore throat
  • Painful swallowing
  • Fever of 101°F or higher
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
  • Red or swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches
  • Headache
  • Nausea or stomach pain

Unlike a viral sore throat, strep throat usually does not cause:

  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Congestion

A sudden sore throat without cold symptoms is a key sign you may need a strep test.

How Is Strep Throat Diagnosed?

The most reliable way to confirm strep throat is through a rapid strep test or throat culture. Renown Urgent Care offers both, often with results in minutes.

Why Treatment Matters

Since strep throat is caused by bacteria, it requires antibiotics. Treatment helps:

  • Shorten the length of the illness
  • Reduce how contagious you are
  • Prevent rare but serious complications

Viral sore throats do not require antibiotics, which is why testing is important.

When to Visit Renown Urgent Care

Visit urgent care if you or your child experiences:

  • A sore throat that begins suddenly
  • Fever higher than 101°F
  • White patches on the tonsils
  • Swollen or painful lymph nodes
  • No cough or congestion
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Symptoms lasting longer than 48 hours

Home Care for Mild Sore Throats

Mild sore throats caused by viruses or irritation may improve with:

  • Rest
  • Warm fluids
  • Hydration
  • Throat lozenges
  • Humidifiers
  • Acetaminophen or ibuprofen

If symptoms begin to resemble strep throat or do not improve, urgent care is the next step.

However, did you know that urinary tract infections (UTIs) are more prevalent during the summer months—especially among women—due to several factors, including temperature, dehydration, prolonged exposure to wet clothing and an increased risk of bacteria spreading to sensitive areas?

Don’t Let the Bugs Bite: Summer Swat List!

As this season beckons more time in the great outdoors for all ages, the risk of bug bites from simply being outside more often also increases. “While many bug bites cause nothing more than an annoying itch or bump, in some cases, they can pose more serious health risks if not treated promptly,” says Dr. Russell Stodtmeister, a family medicine physician with Renown Health.
