The Impactful Role of Renown Health Foundation's Board of Directors

Above: Brian Cushard (left), Renown Health Foundation Board Chair, with his family At Renown Health Foundation, our mission is simple yet powerful – to raise funds that support Renown Health, the largest not-for-profit health system in northern Nevada. We are the driving force behind initiatives that bring state-of-the-art equipment, conduct groundbreaking research, enhance healthcare services, improve patient outcomes and contribute to the overall well-being of our community.  Our Dedicated Board of Directors  Our impactful work would not be possible without our Board of Directors – a fantastic team of 27 local volunteers. They bring diverse skills to the table, working together to create positive changes in healthcare for northern Nevada. Our board is at the core of our Foundation's success by guiding important decisions, sharing valuable insights and actively engaging in community relationships.  Meet Brian Cushard – Renown Health Foundation’s Chair  Brian Cushard took on the role of Foundation Board Chair at the beginning of 2024. Brian, who is the President of LP Insurance Services in Reno, will lead us for the next two years, bringing a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to community well-being. Since joining Renown Health Foundation’s Board in 2018, Brian has been instrumental in shaping our strategic direction.  Brian’s Vision: Advocating for Renown Health’s Mission and Making a Difference  We had the opportunity to sit down with Brian and explore his passion for healthcare philanthropy and the positive changes he envisions. Brian's 'why' is firmly rooted in the belief that a robust health system serves as the backbone of the community. His vision extends beyond fundraising; it's about inspiring the community by sharing remarkable stories of care and championing Renown's impactful contributions.  Q: Why does Renown's mission matter to you, and how do you see your role making a difference?  A: Renown's mission matters deeply to me because, without a highly functioning healthcare system, the economic structure of the community can be impacted. At LP Insurance, where I work, we see ourselves as guardians of our clients' hopes and dreams. This translates to my role on the Board as stewards for the health of others. Advocating for a highly functioning health system is crucial in supporting community members and clients alike. Surrounding ourselves with a solid network is essential. As advocates, our voices are integral in ensuring that everyone's voices are heard.  Q: Can you share a moment that made you want to support healthcare causes?  A: There are those stop-in-your-tracks healthcare moments that make you reassess life's priorities. I've had moments where life comes to a standstill, and what you once thought was important takes a backseat to the basics of life—getting better, one step at a time. In those vulnerable moments, you realize the importance of every person at the hospital. In desperate need, we rely on them. It's eye-opening and gives perspective on what's truly valuable in life.  Q: Tell us about a time when you saw the positive impact of healthcare or philanthropy. How did that influence your decision to get involved?  A: One impactful moment in philanthropy stands out — the Music and Miracles concert featuring the Beach Boys. LP Insurance was a major donor, contributing $100,000 to benefit Sophie’s Place, a music therapy room coming to Renown Children's Hospital. On the day of the event, my wife and I volunteered and saw the remarkable community support for Renown Children’s Hospital. The collective efforts that day raised over $1 million, specifically designated to establish Sophie’s Place. This experience inspired me to want to do more, as I recognized the profound positive impact that philanthropy can have on healthcare and the community.  Note: Sophie’s Place, opening later this year, will offer vital care and healing experiences for young patients at Renown Children’s Hospital.

Renown Health Adds Proactive Level of Protection to Address COVID-19 Deployable Medical Structure at Renown Regional Erected as Precautionary Measure WHAT: As we continue our planning and preparation for the impact of COVID-19, Renown Health now has an alternate care site – a deployable medical facility to serve as an additional respiratory illness evaluation and screening center for Emergency Room patients at Renown Regional. Media is invited to tour the tent before it opens and learn more about how Renown Health physicians and staff are prepared to ensure the safety of patients, staff and our community. It’s important to note there are no confirmed COVID-19 cases at Renown at this time. This deployable medical structure is simply a precautionary measure and adds a proactive level of protection if needed because Renown is committed to doing everything possible to protect patients, staff and community members. WHEN AND WHERE: Jueves, 12 de marzo a las 1 p.m. en el estacionamiento fuera de la Sala de Emergencias del Renown Regional Medical Center en 1155 Mill St, Reno, Nevada. All media must be escorted on hospital property. Mill Street Parking is most convenient. WHY: Due to increasing levels of respiratory illness in our community, as a way to manage influx and limit the exposure between individuals suspected of having respiratory illness and patients and care providers in other areas of the hospital, Renown Health worked with the State Public Health Preparedness to request a deployable medical facility through the Washoe County Emergency Manager. REMSA, the Reno Fire Department and Renown staff also play an integral role in setting up the tent and getting it ready with appropriate supplies. This proactive step to separate patients with symptoms of respiratory illness who need emergency medical care will protect patients in the Emergency Department and other areas of the hospital. Transmission of respiratory illness from patient to patient is not the only concern as healthcare workers can get sick, too. This is a precautionary step Renown is taking as a way we can further help protect patients, staff and community. El Renown Regional Medical Center es el único centro de urgencias certificado de Nivel II (2) entre Sacramento, California y Salt Lake City, Utah. We receive and care for critically-ill and injured patients from as close as our Reno-Tahoe backyard and as far away as Mammoth Lakes, CA, as well as distant rural locations across northern and central Nevada. Renown Regional Medical Center has also been awarded the The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Hospital Accreditation based on compliance with hospital standards related to emergency management, environment of care, infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management. Renown’s Roseview, Sierra and Cardiac Intensive Care Units have each been awarded a Beacon Award of Excellence from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) based on patient outcomes that exceed national benchmarks. Renown has the only intensive care units awarded this distinction in Nevada.   WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING RESPIRATORY OR INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS OR POSSIBLE SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19: Renown is encouraging people to use online tools first, such as virtual visits covered by many insurance companies, including Teladoc, for those insured by Renown’s health plan, Hometown Health.

Area Church Pastors, the City of Reno, the City of Sparks, the Washoe County School District, REMSA and Renown will be available to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on communities of color, and how they have joined together to provide free COVID-19 testing to area residents. REMSA staff will conduct the nasal swab testing and Renown Health will process the tests. Black and Latino Americans are three times more likely than white people to contract COVID-19. There is no cost to be tested. Those with insurance will be asked to provide an insurance card, all others will be tested free, with thanks to the Renown Community Benefits fund.      About Renown Health Renown Health is Reno’s only locally owned, charitable, not-for-profit integrated health network.

Hospital-at-home monitoring allows patients to receive hospital-level care in the comfort of their own homes. Renown Health announced today that they are one of the first institutions to home monitor patients who have been hospitalized with COVID-19, as the integrated health network continues to seek innovative solutions to improving the health- and healthcare of those who live in Nevada. This week, six patients at Renown Regional Medical Center and Renown South Meadows Medical Center diagnosed with COVID-19 were outfitted with this remote ‘hospital at home’ monitoring system. “We are working with some incredible partners to transform care and demonstrate value in a way that appeals to patients and helps clinicians improve outcomes and reduce costs. Renown’s Hospital-at-Home model of care technology enables patients to receive hospital-level care in the comfort of their own homes. There is now compelling evidence that well-monitored, at home treatment can be safer, cheaper and more effective than traditional hospital stays, especially for patients who are elderly, frail or vulnerable to complications.” “This type of technology is a game-changer in improving patient care,” says Paul Sierzenski, MD, MSHQS, Chief Medical Officer, Acute Services. "Given the demand on our hospitals during this COVID-19 pandemic, we are pleased to provide appropriate patients with this telehealth solution which uses wearable, continuous pulse oximetry, assisting our management of patients with COVID-19, and allowing patients the convenience of being in their own homes.” Designed to track the blood oxygen saturation and respiration rate of patients who are hospitalized or quarantined at home, the system uses pulse oximetry with a proprietary remote data capture and surveillance platform accessible from a patient's Android or iOS smartphone or smart device.  The remote monitoring system is designed for easy, initiative use. Patients wear a small metal finger cuff and are provided with a multi-day supply of single-patient-use sensors and access to a mobile app. Monitoring data collected by the sensor is shared with the patient’s smartphone using a secure Bluetooth® connection. Twice daily, or as directed, the program is configured to actively notify patients to answer questions such as, "are you having trouble breathing?" and "what is your temperature?” and pushes these responses along with the monitoring data to clinicians at Renown for evaluation. “Renown is working with a number of exciting technology companies who provide hospital-at-home technology, especially as they respond to the needs of our community through the COVID-19 pandemic, and work to make healthcare more affordable by offering services in lower-cost settings,” says Ty Windfeldt, MBA, Chief Operating Officer- Health Services. “One of the benefits of offering Hometown Health- our own not-for-profit health plan; a medical group; an accountable care organization and a clinically integrated network, is that even though Medicare does not pay for acute services offered outside of hospitals for fee-for-service beneficiaries, we are able to invest, pioneer and design innovative models for care and delivery that other health systems cannot.”  "Our patients at Renown have the most sophisticated and reliable respiratory monitoring available anywhere," says Jason Farnsworth, MBA, Director of Respiratory Care Services at Renown. "We know that continuous physiologic monitoring improves outcomes and saves lives. The ability to extend that capability to patients in non-traditional settings and at home during this crisis is transformative. Our teams are excited to be able to delight patients and their families – and ensure they receive the clinical support they need by using this technology and monitoring.” “To know that we can provide quality care for patients recovering from COVID-19, and help ease their transition back to their normal lives, where they can recover in the comfort of their own homes, is fantastic,” says Mitchell Fong, Director of Telehealth Services at Renown. “Patients have shared that they enjoy being at home, sitting in their favorite recliner, enjoying a home-cooked meal and even transitioning back to remote work. If we can help people feel better, we feel better.”  For the fourth year in a row, Renown Health earned the “Digital Most Wired” honors by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME). The CHIME annual survey accesses how effectively health care organizations apply core and advanced technologies into their clinical and business programs to improve health and expand access to care in their communities. In U.S. News and World Report Best Hospital rankings, Renown South Meadows Medical Center was listed #1 in the State of Nevada. Hospitals earning a high performing rating were significantly better than the national average. Care At Your Fingertips: Renown Launches Virtual Symptom Checker

New technology helps patients determine the best level of care for their health needs. Renown Health just announced a new, digital tool designed to keep our community safe and healthy. Symptom Checker, which launched today, is a user-friendly, web-based platform that assesses patients’ symptoms and seamlessly directs them to the appropriate level of care within the Renown network. From there, a patient can identify the area of the body responsible for their discomfort, and specify their symptoms. Upon entering their symptoms, patients receive a detailed health summary and care guide, which helps them determine the most appropriate action to take. Patients are able to schedule a visit at a Renown location directly through the Symptom Checker portal. “Thanks to Symptom Checker, our patients will have around-the-clock support at their fingertips to help them make informed decisions about their healthcare needs,” said Tony Slonim, MD, DrPH, President and CEO of Renown Health. “We understand that determining the right level of care for you or your loved ones may bring about some uncertainty, which is why we are proud to continuously offer new and innovative technologies that make it easier for our community members to live healthier lives.”  “As we continue experiencing cases of COVID-19 in Washoe County, many individuals with COVID are unsure when they should seek medical care, as well as the appropriate location to receive care,” said Melodie Osborn, RN, Chief Quality and Nursing Officer, Health Services. “With Symptom Checker, people can easily input their symptoms, and include the symptom severity, to be directed to the best level of care for their individual health needs—making it an extremely valuable tool as we fight to keep our community safe and healthy amidst this pandemic.”  Symptom Checker is free to use and does not require users to be Renown patients. The Symptom Checker content is written by medical doctors, Barton Schmitt and David Thompson, who are nursing triage experts; and symptom care guides stem from clinical protocols used by doctors and nurses worldwide. As a way to limit the exposure and to assure health and safety measures for other hospital patients and providers, Renown is again working with the Washoe County Emergency Manager, the State Public Health Preparedness Team, REMSA, the Reno Fire Department and others to re-erect a Deployable Medical Structure outside the Renown Regional Emergency Department in order to screen and evaluate community members suspected of having respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19.  WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19: Si tiene síntomas relacionados con la COVID-19, llame al programa de telemedicina de su proveedor de atención médica o visite www.renown.org/covid-19/ antes de programar una cita o buscar atención en persona. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please seek immediate medical attention.
