Relief Without Surgery: Modern Options for Long-Term Pain

Renown Interventional Pain and Spine is expanding its roster of treatments and geographic reach to enhance the care of patients with short- and long-term pain.

Comprised of Board-Certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physicians

The five-member team at Renown Interventional Pain and Spine provides full-spectrum care for acute and chronic pain stemming from a variety of conditions. Thanks to a recent expansion of Renown Medical Group – South Carson in Carson City, the group can now serve more northern Nevadans.

“What truly distinguishes our program is our commitment to individualized treatment,” says Casey Keating, MD, section chief of Interventional Pain and Spine.
“We conduct expert, independent reviews of each patient’s imaging, which allows us to tailor treatment plans to patients’ specific conditions and needs. This targeted approach increases the likelihood of meaningful, long-term relief.”

Wide-Ranging Therapies

Interventional Pain and Spine physicians provide noninvasive treatments, such as medications, as well as injections and other interventional treatments. They also deliver interdisciplinary care by referring patients for:

  • Physical and occupational therapy
  • Aquatic therapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Chiropractic services
  • And more

Emma Rickles, MD, interventional pain management physician, provides minimally invasive treatments for chronic back and neck pain.

“Back and neck pain can often be closely linked to issues in the hip and shoulder joints, so I commonly treat pain in those locations as well,” she says.
“I frequently perform fluoroscopy-guided epidural steroid injections to treat spinal stenosis and radiculopathy, medial branch blocks and radiofrequency ablation for facet joint arthritis, and injections into the sacroiliac joint for pain.”

Sharlene Su, MD, interventional pain management physician, emphasizes minimal yet effective treatment:

“When procedures are needed, I offer advanced techniques, such as nerve blocks, epidurals, radiofrequency ablation and joint injections.
Additionally, my expertise in neuromodulation, including spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulation, brings leading-edge solutions that can significantly reduce chronic pain and transform the lives of those who have endured it for years.”

Innovations in Low Back Pain and Tennis Elbow Treatment

Interventional Pain and Spine experts offer innovative therapies for two common sources of chronic pain:

  • Intracept™ Procedure
A minimally invasive treatment for low back pain. Uses radiofrequency energy to ablate the basivertebral nerve, providing long-term relief and improved function.
  • Tenex™ Procedure
Designed for lateral epicondylitis (tennis or pickleball elbow), this minimally invasive treatment eliminates damaged tissue with ultrasound to relieve discomfort.
“We deliver state-of-the-art, innovative care to our community by identifying the root causes of patients’ pain and helping them return to their normal activities, including the fun outdoor pursuits our area is known for.”

How are wait times calculated?

Our estimated ER wait times reflect the average time from check-in to being seen by a medical professional during triage, where patients are prioritized based on the severity of their condition.
