Position Purpose

Radiation Safety Program Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, developing and managing all aspects of a comprehensive radiation safety program. The Radiation Safety Program Manager ensures regulatory compliance within Renown Health institution, the affiliated medical centers, and the other affiliated sites, establishes protocols, plans, organizes objectives and long-range programs, and evaluates the effectiveness of operations. This position has the authority to formulate, affect, interpret, or implement management policies or operating practices.

This position is required to be on call for emergencies after regular business hours, on weekends and holidays.

Nature and Scope

This position is responsible for the implementation, coordination, and day-to-day oversight of the radiation protection program. In addition, has the authority to enforce radiation policies and procedures regarding radiation safety and regulatory compliance of the use of ionizing radiation. The Radiation Safety Program Manager is not responsible for the direct supervision of individuals using ionizing radiation in their daily routines. These individuals are supervised, under Radiation Safety Program Manager oversight, by other members of the “radiation safety team” as required by regulation and/or by the radiation protection program.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

1. Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of Medical Imaging, Medical Physics, and Radiation Safety.

2. Ability to apply the concepts of all of the above to the radiation safety process and to communicate these concepts to professional and technical staff for implementation.

3. Mathematical and computer skills for imaging science including data management and picture archiving systems.

4. Interpersonal Communication, Organizational, Teaching, and Advanced Computer skills.

5. An in-depth knowledge of local, state and federal laws and regulations related to physics and imaging services.

6. Ability to communicate effectively at all levels and be well organized to smoothly accomplish tasks and responsibilities.

7. Works closely with the Medical Staff and hospital administration to assure that the administration functions and specific radiation safety matters are consistent with Health System goals and objectives.

8. Ability to work effectively with a broad range of personnel, including physicians, employees, clinical directors, administrative personnel, and community officials.

9. The ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and accurately with people verbally and in writing.

10. Is responsible for establishing and maintaining educational activities for all employees involving radiation safety, orientation in-service, and assist in planning implementation of training programs.

Maintains personnel monitoring program for providers and staff and ensures that all users wear personnel monitoring equipment such as film badges or thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLD), when required.

This position does not provide direct patient care.

Education:
Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English. Bachelor’s degree in health physics, medical physics, nuclear engineering, or other relevant science related field required. Master’s degree in health physics, medical physics, nuclear engineering, or other relevant science related field preferred.
Experience:
Minimum 2 years’ experience as a Radiation Safety Program Manager preferred.
License(s):
Radiation Producing Machine Inspector license preferred.
Certification(s):
Successful completion of a Medical Radiation Safety Officer course required within six (6) months and one full year of institutional specific radiation safety experience approved by preceptor (Radiation Safety Officer) who has experience with radiation safety aspects of similar types of use for individual seeking experience. Upon completion, authorized submission approved by institution to Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) that the individual has satisfactorily completed the requirements (b)(1) and (d) of 10 CFR 35.50 to include written attestation approval that individual is able to independently fulfill the radiation safety-related duties as a Radiation Safety Officer.
Computer / Typing:
Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word and have the ability to use the computer to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
