Two Ways to Build Your Leadership Potential

Renown offers two key programs:

  • Leadership In Training – a 12-week course focused on foundational leadership skills

The programs include leadership shadowing across departments and hands-on workshops covering emotional intelligence, effective communication, and relationship-building strategies.

Recent graduates from these career advancement programs shared their biggest takeaways and valuable advice for others starting out in the healthcare industry.

Andrea, Respiratory Therapist

"The High Potential Program taught me the skill of self-reflecting, which became the foundation for adopting other core competencies, like fostering psychological safety, building strong relationships, and implementing process improvement. I also gained insights into the different departments across the organization and the many paths available for career mobility.

The most valuable skill I developed was networking. Learning how to connect with the diverse individuals who keep the hospital running helped me understand the importance of relationship-building as a key to success."

Advice
“My advice would be to ask for a job shadow. This is a powerful way to gain clarity and ensure the career you’re considering aligns with your values.”

Logan, Revenue Cycle Trainer

“I saw Leadership in Training as an amazing opportunity to strengthen my current skill set and learn new skills to be an informal leader until the right leader role opens. One thing I loved about each leader that spoke to our group is that everyone had a different career path, but several stumbled into leadership. They had no intention of pursuing it but saw a patient care or organizational gap and advocated for our patients. That’s true leadership!”

Advice
"Healthcare is one of the largest and most complicated industries in existence; it is constantly changing as do the needs of our patients, technological and medical breakthroughs, and regulatory requirements. Give yourself enough grace to learn all aspects of your role, network with people across the organization, and always keep the patient at the forefront of everything you do. Lastly, embrace the golden rule: give the service you expect to receive in return."

Colby, Case Manager

“I participated in the High Potential Program. It was an amazing experience. I was able to meet many different people in different parts of the hospital which helped me to learn about the many distinct but interdependent departments which keep our organization running. I also learned many skills on personal development and communication with others.”

Advice

"Take care of your health. Start wherever you can and work your way towards what you want to do! Treat everyone with respect and try not to view some jobs as more important than others. Every job in healthcare is crucial, from the custodial staff to the CEO. Also, if you are interested in a certain job there are hundreds of people at Renown who are willing to answer your questions and let you shadow them to help you decide if it’s something you wish to pursue."

Niki, Senior Certified Medical Assistant

“I have truly learned a lot from the class and experience, and I will take the things I have learned and use them in my daily life both professionally and personally. The main thing that I learned is how to carry myself. I am more aware of the things I say and how I say them. Leadership is a goal for me, so it helps to use the information and skills we learned to prove myself.”

Advice

"I say go for it! I have had such a sense of accomplishment in the things that I have done since pursuing healthcare and while working at Renown. Renown has so many options and different paths you can take."

Skylar, Clinical Engineer

“The lessons, methods, and skills acquired from my time in the Enrich-U program will have nothing but a positive influence on my future career path at Renown. Having an increased awareness of organizational operations helped me to understand where my efforts make the most impact, and where there are opportunities for me to make an impact. My time in the Leadership in Training program has also helped me connect with our Mission, Vision, and Values and how I can find personal motivation and purpose in my work through these organizational pillars.”

Advice

“My advice to someone who wants to build a career in healthcare is, first and foremost, there is the perfect job for everyone within the healthcare realm. From patient-facing and customer service roles to the unseen operations that keeps the healthcare facility and supply chain going – there is a niche somewhere for you that can be a rewarding and unexpectedly exciting career. Keep your mind open to the possibilities, stay flexible, and seek learning opportunities to see if there is another niche in the healthcare system that calls to you.”
