Beat the Heat: Tips to Protect Against Summer Skin Rashes

Summer fun and outdoor activities can sometimes lead to irritated skin. With guidance from Renown Health, learn how to protect against common summer rashes.
From backyard barbecues to lake days, summer is the season for outdoor enjoyment. Heat, sun and sweat can potentially lead to unwanted skin flare-ups, especially in northern Nevada’s dry climate. At Renown, we are here to help you this season and all year long. Below, we share tips to protect your skin and treat common summer rashes.
Why Skin Rashes Show Up in Summer
Sunshine and sweat can irritate your skin, leading to a few common rashes:
- Heat rash: Caused by blocked sweat glands, can appear as small red bumps often under clothing.
- Sun rash: Can show up after sun exposure usually as red itchy patches.
- Contact dermatitis: Products like sunscreen, laundry detergent or synthetic fabrics can trigger a reaction, especially sensitive skin.
- Swimmer’s itch: An allergic reaction caused by parasites in freshwater lakes. It appears in small red bumps or blisters and can be very itchy.
- Chlorine rash: Caused by sensitivity to pool chemicals. This type of rash may look like hives or dry scaly patches after swimming in a chlorinated pool.
Simple Ways to Stay Rash-Free
- Stay cool and dry: Spend time in shaded or air-conditioned spaces during peak heat hours. Gently pat your skin dry after sweating.
- Choose your fabrics: Opt for lightweight breathable fabrics like cotton to prevent sweat buildup and skin friction.
- Go light on products: Skip heavy lotions and oils. Water-based or gel moisturizers are better at keeping your skin calm and clear.
- Use skin-safe sunscreen: Choose mineral-based sunscreen for sensitive skin. Always remember to reapply!
If You Notice a Rash, Try These Remedies:
- Cool the area with a clean damp cloth or take a lukewarm shower.
- Apply over-the-counter creams like calamine lotion or 1% hydrocortisone to reduce itching and inflammation.
- Wear loose clothing and avoid any product that may have caused the reaction.
When to Seek Medical Care
If you are unsure about the cause of a mild rash or how to treat it, consult your primary care physician to discuss the issue and develop a treatment plan. If a rash worsens, spreads rapidly, or causes severe pain, swelling, or fever, you should always seek evaluation from a medical provider at urgent care or an emergency room—especially if you do not have a primary care physician or need immediate care. If the rash is accompanied by a fever, signs of infection, swelling in the face or throat, or difficulty breathing, seek emergency medical attention right away.
Our providers can address your skin concerns and offer guidance to get you back to enjoying the sunshine with peace of mind.
