Medicare’s Annual Election Period Begins Oct. 15

Annual Election Period for Medicare beneficiaries to enroll or change health insurance Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 It only happens once a year – more than half a million Medicare beneficiaries in Nevada get to decide during the Medicare Annual Election Period (AEP) from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, if a Medicare Advantage plan is best for their medical needs. Residents of Washoe, Carson City, Clark and Nye counties have the opportunity to enroll in one of the plans offered by Senior Care Plus®, a Medicare Advantage Plan from Renown’s Hometown Health, which offers $0 premium plans with a variety of benefits, including worldwide emergency care, low prescription drug costs and is the only Medicare Advantage plan accepted by Renown Medical Group physicians, and offering full access to the Renown Health hospital network named “Best in Nevada” by US News & World Report for the last two years. “As the only not-for-profit health plan in northern Nevada, Senior Care Plus® is more than just a Medicare Advantage Plan; we are your partner for better health and wellbeing,” says Bethany Sexton, CEO of Hometown Health. “We regularly ask our members how we can help them in their journey to health and wellness, and our team works throughout the year to make continuous improvements to our plans. That’s why we are excited to announce new cost-saving health benefits that will be included in the 2023 Senior Care Plus® Medicare Advantage Plan." For 2023, Senior Care Plus® members will enjoy access to Renown physicians, services, and hospitals as well as new benefits including comprehensive dental services, free telemedicine visits for dermatology needs, free annual hearing exams and low-cost hearing aids and home medical equipment including blood sugar test strips, oxygen equipment and supplies, CPAP sleep apnea machines and home infusion supplies. There’s also a program that rewards Senior Plus® Medicare Advantage members for participating in healthy activities. During a time where inflation is impacting families across the country, reducing out-of-pocket expenses is just one of the ways Senior Care Plus® is encouraging their Medicare members to continue seeking the quality medical care they need and deserve. CJ Bawden, Senior Director of Government Programs at Hometown Health, elaborates on what sets Senior Care Plus apart from other Medicare Advantage Plans on the market, “At Senior Care Plus®, we are member obsessed. Annual Enrollment time can be a stressful time for those navigating the Medicare programs available to them. What makes Senior Care Plus different from other programs is that we are local, just like our members. Customer support and resources are right here in our community,” said Bawden. “We are also pleased to have a Renown Medical Group practice and medical providers devoted exclusively to offering expert care to Senior Care Plus® Medicare Advantage members at Del Monte Lane in Reno, adjacent to the Rancharrah complex,” says Dr. Derek Beenfeldt, Medical Director, Hometown Health. “Senior Care Plus members who choose to make Renown Medical Group - Senior Care - Del Monte their primary care facility enjoy same-day appointment access; longer appointment times; geriatric-focused providers and on-site Personal Assistants." Medicare beneficiaries and Medicare eligible seniors can prepare for the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period by visiting medicare.gov. This website, operated by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), allows beneficiaries to compare health and drug plans so they can make an informed decision about their coverage. Prospective members can also take advantage of Senior Care Plus specific resources like free educational seminars or a one-on-one in-person meeting with an Enrollment Specialist, who can assist members in completing paperwork and ensuring you have the right medical coverage in place, for calendar year 2023. Questions are answered with live-person telephone hours between 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday at toll free number at 800-336-0123 or local number at 775-982-3232. Surgery Center of Reno To Offer Option for Outpatient Surgery

Brings a new level of convenience, access and affordability to surgical care in northern Nevada. In a collaboration designed to offer consumers additional convenient and affordable options for outpatient surgery, Surgery Center of Reno (SCOR) and Renown Health today announced a new partnership. “We are thrilled to bring a new level of convenience in surgical care to patients and providers in the Reno community and outlying areas, to deliver superior clinical quality and service, and make health care more affordable,” said James Lynch, MD, President, and Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Surgery Center of Reno.  “We trust and value the Surgery Center of Reno and its team of surgeons, clinicians and administrators and the excellent quality of care and compassion they provide to their patients,” said Tony Slonim, MD, DrPH, Renown’s President & CEO. “Given our mutual interests in advancing high-quality and high-value care, this partnership expands capabilities, enhances access and affordability for patients and physicians, improves the health of our community and establishes Renown and the Surgery Center of Reno as the premier destination for surgery in northern Nevada.” This joint venture for outpatient surgery care is the result of the unique collaborative relationship between Renown Health, Reno’s only not-for-profit health care system; and the Surgery Center of Reno, an independent physician owned ambulatory surgery center with Regent Surgical Health as the managing partner. The SCOR and Renown partnership brings together three key elements to serve patients and our community with enhanced outpatient surgery care that includes: Out-of-pocket cost savings for patients. Ambulatory Surgical Centers (ASCs) like Surgery Center of Reno, offer a high-quality, low-cost alternative for many surgical procedures. Patient preference and the desire to decrease healthcare costs continue to fuel Renown’s interest in transitioning appropriate surgeries from hospitals to freestanding ambulatory surgery centers. Significant innovations in minimally-invasive surgical procedures along with advances in anesthesia techniques, reduced complications and recovery times for selected procedures, have helped to make ambulatory surgery centers popular. Renown is focused on creating options for high quality, affordable care for patients and insurance providers by having selected surgical procedures occur in the ASC setting. Comfort and convenience for patients. Surgery Center of Reno offers an upscale experience and has some of the most advanced technology for Ambulatory Surgical Centers in the state. Since all surgeries at SCOR are pre-scheduled, a patient’s procedure is never bumped or delayed by an emergency or trauma case. Surgery is scheduled at ideal times for the patient and family. After surgery, the patient has time to wake up in the recovery room, and then recuperate in their own home.  The same high-quality physicians who work in the operating rooms at Renown hospitals also work as part of the Surgery Center of Reno, including surgeons specializing in Spine, Orthopedics, General Surgery, Ear, Nose & Throat, Pain management, Urology/Lithotripsy, Gynecology, Ophthalmology; Dental/ Oral Surgery, Podiatry and Weight Loss Surgery.   Since their inception more than forty years ago, Ambulatory Surgical Centers have demonstrated an ability to deliver quality and customer service while simultaneously reducing costs. The Surgery Center of Reno and all Ambulatory Surgical Centers are highly regulated, adhere to stringent quality and safety guidelines, are certified by Medicare and the Nevada State Department of Health, accredited with accrediting agencies such as the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care or The Joint Commission, and have adopted extensive patient safety procedures. Of course, if complications or an emergency were to develop, patients have immediate access to Renown’s hospitals.  “Renown has used our experience through COVID-19 to emerge better and stronger, and we are realigning to meet new consumer demands for health and healthcare services that are convenient, accessible and affordable,” said Bethany Sexton, Chief Transformation Officer. “We are excited to partner with SCOR to exceed people’s expectations and to delight our community with smart, innovative approaches to care. As our nation struggles with how to improve a troubled health care system, the experience of ASCs is a great example of a successful transformation in health care delivery.”  Each year, millions of procedures are performed in outpatient centers. Outpatient and ambulatory surgery centers can save money and improve the efficiency and convenience of care for patients and health care providers alike. ASCs are at the center of today’s most pressing healthcare initiatives- value based care and risk-sharing models. Nic Towle, RN, Administrator at SCOR says, “We are dedicated to providing excellent care in a safe environment and want all of our patients and their families to be comfortable and receive the highest quality surgical care. Not all procedures can take place in an outpatient setting and may require a hospital stay regardless of your preference. We suggest you speak with your doctor to ensure you qualify as a candidate, to learn about all the options and what is best for you.” About SCOR SCOR is a well-established, Medicare certified, AAAHC accredited, multidisciplinary ambulatory surgery center in Reno. The ASC is partnered with a leader in development and management of ASCs, Regent Surgical Health based in Westchester, Illinois. SCOR has proven to be a leader in expanding services that include minimally invasive techniques in spine and general surgery. The surgery center has one of the strongest group of fellowship-trained and board-certified specialists and has won multiple awards for clinical excellence. Sterling Silver Club Hosts Virtual Stretching Lecture for 55+

A dial-in option is available for individuals who don’t have access to a computer.   “A good morning stretching routine puts the body in motion and has the power to set the tone of your entire day,” said Dr. Winkel. “Plus, stretching becomes even more important as we age and our range of movement lessens and we wake up with more aches and pains. Improved flexibility, balance, muscle control and a reduced risk of injury are just a few of the wellness benefits of routine stretching, all contributing to a healthier lifestyle. There is no better way to start your day than with a few tried-and-true stretches.”  Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable workout attire and sturdy shoes so they can try the exercises out with the group. While the Sterling Silver Club is not currently hosting in-person events during this time, it is hosting educational talks like this one to help aging adults stay healthy through its online channels.  “The last few months have been difficult for many older adults as they stay indoors with little to no in-person contact with their loved ones,” said Tori DellaRocca, who oversees Renown’s Sterling Silver Club loyalty program. “The need to stay connected is more important now than ever. It has been a joy giving our members something to look forward to- a chance to learn, ask questions and share their stories. Seeing everyone tune in from their homes has been a powerful reminder that we truly are all in this together.”      For more information on upcoming virtual events from Renown’s Sterling Silver Club and to sign up, please visit www.renown.org/SterlingSilver.      About Renown Health Renown Health is the region’s largest, locally owned and governed, not-for-profit integrated healthcare network serving Nevada, Lake Tahoe and northeast California.

While people of all ages are coping with the challenges of social isolation, there is one group of individuals who may feel especially lonely during these uncertain times—our aging adults. To offer some friendly conversation and answer any questions older adults may have about Renown’s commitment to keeping them safe during the COVID-19 crisis, Renown Health employees are making phone calls to its Sterling Silver Club members. Renown is also hosting several virtual events to reach older audiences.  “The human element of connecting with these members is really special,” said Tori DellaRocca, who oversees this loyalty program at Renown. “Many of the people we call live alone and some have no one to check in on them. It has been a pleasure talking to our members; learning more about them and what they’re doing to pass the time, offering ideas to help them stay busy, and assuring them Renown is here to keep them safe. Desde el lanzamiento de esta campaña en marzo, hacer estas llamadas telefónicas ha sido el punto destacado de mi día, y sé que no soy la única que se siente así”. Todas las personas mayores de 55 están invitadas a unirse al Sterling Silver Club gratuito de Renown, creado para ayudar a las personas a vivir vidas felices y saludables todos los días. Members enjoy exclusive benefits all designed with their interests in mind. From social events and lectures to entertainment (virtual for now), special discounts, and health insights and tips, this club is a place for community members to shine and embrace the joys of healthy aging. “I enjoy the lectures,” said Sterling Silver Club member Liz Barnes. “They appeal to my desire to know more and invariably provide an ‘informed’ call to action.” “After the [lecture] on diabetes prevention, I enrolled in the one-year long, Renown-sponsored diabetes prevention program,” said Liz’s husband, Barry. “After the sleep seminar, I changed my bedtime habits.” These virtual gatherings are hosted every Tuesday and Thursday at noon. Community members can learn more here. During this live event, Renown psychologist Dr. Buddy Coard will discuss the impact of anxiety as we age and what we can do to prevent it from getting in the way of enjoying life. Those interested in attending can RSVP here. “Our members have enjoyed the opportunity to learn from experts in the field of healthy aging as well as connect with their fellow community members,” said DellaRocca. “We’re all in this together, and these virtual events, combined with our phone call efforts, show our older population they truly are not alone.”  For more information on upcoming virtual events from Renown’s Sterling Silver Club and to sign up, please visit www.renown.org/SterlingSilver.      About Renown Health Renown Health is a locally governed and locally owned, not-for-profit integrated healthcare network serving northern Nevada, Lake Tahoe and northeast California. Surgeon’s offices will also be reaching out to assist patients with rescheduling their surgeries for a future date.  Elective surgeries that are REQUIRED and not optional will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis daily with the surgeon, patient and a medical leadership review committee at Renown. Your surgeon’s office will be in contact with you with more information about these REQUIRED surgeries This temporary measure will allow Renown’s physicians and staff to enact the emergency preparedness plans they have been developing for weeks to create additional capacity for inpatients and to continue to deliver high quality care during the anticipated surge in COVID-19 cases in northern Nevada. The new guidelines do NOT apply to EMERGENCY surgeries performed in Renown hospitals. There are different types of surgery, this decision impacts Elective-Optional surgeries only. Elective – Optional surgery – Elective surgeries are not usually necessary for the individual to stay in good health. They are non-emergency and planned in advance. A wide range of surgeries can be elective. Most cosmetic surgeries are elective. Other surgeries such as organ donation, scoliosis surgery, tonsillectomies and other minor surgeries can also be considered elective. Required surgery – Surgery which needs to be done in order to retain quality of life. As opposed to urgent or emergency surgery, required surgeries do not need to be performed immediately. Examples of required surgery are kidney stone or tumor removal. Urgent or emergency surgery – When a patient’s condition is life threatening, surgery is considered emergent. Emergency surgeries must be performed immediately, even when the patient is unconscious and cannot give consent. Examples include trauma and appendicitis. Life-threatening conditions can occur during labor and delivery which may require emergency surgery. Nationally Recognized Heart Surgeons Join Renown Health

Two Open-Heart Surgeons and Two Advanced Practitioners Bring Nearly 70 Years of Local Experience. As part of a continuing focus on offering comprehensive care for patients experiencing cardiac and vascular disease across northern Nevada, Renown Health Department of Surgery and Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health have developed Renown’s first division of cardiothoracic surgery dedicated to heart surgery patients. He is a clinical associate professor of surgery at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) and currently serves as medical director of cardiothoracic surgery for Renown Regional Medical Center. Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health offers the most highly-skilled and experienced heart and vascular team and the most advanced heart center in the region. Renown has long been the region’s heart care leader – performing the area’s first open-heart surgery, angioplasty, stent and valve replacements decades ago. Additionally, Renown’s Roseview, Sierra and Cardiac Intensive Care Units (ICUs) were the only ICUs in Nevada to receive the Beacon Award of Excellence from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. This distinction is based on sustained unit performance and patient outcomes that exceed national benchmarks. As Reno’s only locally-owned, charitable, not-for-profit integrated health network, Renown continues to meet customer demand for affordable healthcare and enhanced service and access by keeping the highest levels of clinical quality care right here in our community.
